Telefonica launches iPhone app that makes free calls - Gant Daily Posted: 09 May 2012 10:34 AM PDT May 9, 2012 at 9:03 AM by AHN · Windsor Genova – Fourth Estate Cooperative News Writer Madrid, Spain (4E) – Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica announced Wednesday the launch of its free mobile app that allows any iPhone users around the world to make free calls and SMS through their data plan or Wi-Fi. The app, dubbed TU Me, works on smartphones installed with the program regardless of phone operator. It will not use the existing call minutes of the smartphone user. Instead, usage is deducted from the user's data allowance. TU Me users can also exchange photos, location information and voice messages. All communication data is stored in Telefonica's cloud server, making them available to users even if the smartphone gets lost. TU Me is seen to rival Skype, although it cannot connect to normal telephone numbers. It is user-friendly in that all functions are done on one screen and data is stored on a timeline format to keep a history of conversations. Telefonica has 300 million subscribers. The company will also make the app available on Android smartphones.
