We joined forces with secure communications firm Paradigm and Cable & Wireless Worldwide to lay on the free minutes.

And they are for ALL overseas servicemen, not just those in Afghanistan. Sarah Perzylo, 36, from Colchester, Essex - mum to Mia, four, and Millie, one - was delighted.

Her husband, Colour Sergeant Kurt, 35, is with The Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan.

Sarah said: "It's great The Sun is funding extra phone minutes. We'll all be able to talk to him."

Keith Norton, managing director of Paradigm, said: "We hope the additional talk time will bring some comfort to families of those on operational duty overseas."
