Google has started a new phone service whereby Gmail users can call from within their email account to a physical phone. The service is free for now for any calls that are made to either Canada or the US. Since Google started the service, you may be wondering just how successful or popular it may be.

According to a Tweet that has been sent out through a Google Twitter account, the search engine giant has confirmed that over 1 million phone calls have been made through their phone service in the first 24 hours of operation. That's an impressive feat, but remember that Gmail boasts a user base over 175 million accounts.

Part of the high call rate will undoubtedly be due to curiosity, many will want to tryout Google's free service to see what it's all about. We'll learn more about this Skype alternative in the days/months to come but so long as Google keeps their long distance rate pricing competitive and their is no network congestion, they should do just fine. Right now, Google charges 2-cents per minute for calls made to Argentina, China, France, Germany and the UK but there is some discussion that these promotional rates may change down the road.
