Airport plans 'cell phone' parking

Free parking to be offered for those meeting passengers

By EXPRESS STAFF

By October, Friedman Memorial Airport will have a small, separate parking lot near the terminal where friends and families can wait for free for cell phone calls from arriving passengers to come pick them up at curbside.

Airport Manager Rick Baird said three or four parking spaces below the main parking lot will be constructed for the special use.

The "cell parking lot" was a condition laid down by the Friedman Memorial Airport Authority before it would approve a rate increase for parking in the main lot.

Several airport authority members said it's impossible to plan on picking up passengers in a half hour when a parking charge would kick in because of flight delays or other circumstances.

A number of U.S. airports, Baird said, have the so-called "cell phone lots" where families and friends can park without charge.
